Congratulations to ‘73’s first flag officer nominee. This year’s board reached down to find Dave Nicholson. Nick was en route to CGC DALLAS and couldn’t be reached for comment, but I know he would have said: "Who the heck’s in charge of making those decisions?" Actually, no one was really surprised - it was just a matter of time, and glad to see it arrived early. Congratulations, Nick and Becky.

Dan Farrell reported back from the ’73 cruise to Alaska with this message:

"Hi guys,
I'm finally back after a great 7 days in Alaska and then a few hot days in sticky New Orleans.

"Mike Ashdown is preparing an email to summarize some of the cruise, butin a few words it was great - you missed a fun time. Mike and Cindy Ashdown, Bill and Margie Kline, and Janet and I had 7 totally sunny days in Southeast Alaska last week! That is unheard of for those of you that have traveled that area. The mountains and glaciers were beautiful. We met up with the (Bill) Paulicks and (Randy) Corrigans in Juneau ( we had a few brews at the Red Dog Saloon as I did in 1974 on my last trip) and the (Gary) Steinforts in Ketichikan. Gary has a set of government quarters that rivals any other. It overlooks the pass from the hill above the Base. He has 2 open rooms and is ready for any visitors.

"Hope to see all of you at Homecoming. Margie Kline took 7 rolls of pictures, so I'm sure you can see what we did in minute detail. We had fun kidding her with her camera and tripod all week.

"See you in New London.

Dan"

Mike Sadler also e-mailed this update:

"This is another proud father looking for bragg'n rights. Shannon has been accepted at the Manhattan School of Music (NYC) and will be studying JAZZ (vocal) for the next 4 years. Stand by everyone, I'll let you know when the CD is released.

"I also wish to apologize to the hard working members of the class reunion team. I've promised to participate and have the honor of being sent out of town on each and every day they met. Sorry guys, I really do wish to help.

"Finally, if anyone talks with Mike Pierce, please tell him to get his _ _ _ to the reunion. He is directly responsible for Mama and I getting ready for our 25th. I don't know whether to thank him or kill him but I need to see him to do either.

"Looking forward to seeing everyone in September...golly, its seems like just only 5 years ago....

I saw Dave Young at the Commandant’s change of command in May. He sent along this picture and note:

"My wife and I made it to "Coach Loy's ' change of command at the end of May. Nice guys do sometimes finish first ! It was a great opportunity to see many old friends. I've enclosed a photo of some old war horses (right to left Joe Duncan, Gary Steinfort , Bob Petko and Dave Young -alias "Head Hawk")

By the way I would like all classmates and fellow alumni to visit and support Joe and Anne Duncan in their new business "Salem Herb Farm" in Salem , CT.

"Having witnessed the success of Jim Loy (Coached Class of '73 in basketball) and Mike Montgomery, final four coach of the Stamford Cardinals (Also coached Class of '73 as Freshman coach) it has become apparent to me there is a correlation. If you want to rise to the top of your profession one should certainly consider the value of coaching members of the class of '73 in basketball.

"My theory is that you do not necessarily have to coach former b-ball players , but any member of the class of '73. In fact, you might get a better return on investment (ROI) by coaching non basketball players.

"My recommendation is to set up short basketball clinics at homecoming and allow interested parties for small fee, say $1000.00 per hour, to shout instruction to volunteers from our class. Looking forward to seeing you at homecoming and I hope someone will finally take me seriously.

Sincerely,

Dave 'Head Hawk' Young" DEDR@AOL.com

Finally, I think we all need to thank our reunion for the excellent job they’ve done putting together a reunion program, getting the word out, getting organized and all the rest. If you’ve ever set up "events", you know that it’s not at all easy. I was impressed with the concise package we all received which explained all, and the good follow-up for procrastinators. Thanks, Reunion Committee 73ers, spouses and helpers. We’ll bring 25 in with style.

Till next time,

Bud
